On Saturday 12th September, members of the Bicycle Adventure club will be making their way to Limehouse Basin to begin a 4 day odyssey, riding 157 miles along the towpaths of the Grand Union Canal back home to Birmingham.
We will be wildcamping en-route. I have identified potential spots for us to scout out when we get to the end of the day.
Here is the itinerary:
Day 1
Saturday 12th September
Komoot: https://www.komoot.com/tour/237673353
38.3 miles
Limehouse Basin to Croxley Green
Meet at Limehouse basin for a 12 noon departure. This is the furthest terminus of the Grand Union Canal on the Regents Canal. We won’t follow the canal from here. We will make our way 16 miles West across London, loosely following the Thames to where the Grand Union joins the Thames at Brentford. Here we will follow the Grand union canal out of London for 22.5 miles to Whippendell Woods, our camp for the night, just outside Croxley Green.
You will need snacks and a picnic during the day. There is a Harvester at Croxley Green where we will aim to eat an evening meal around 6 pm. Sunset is at 19:30 so we need to get up into the woods and set up just after this before we lose the light.
Day 2
Sunday 13th September
Komoot: https://www.komoot.com/tour/237760589
42.3 miles
Croxley Green to Milton Keynes
There is an option of grabbing a coffee after the first 5 miles in Kings Langley, then we will push a further 7 miles to Berkhamsted where there is a wetherspoons for breakfast. There is a Tesco Metro Opposite to stock up on your fuel for the day.
The day will end just North of Milton Keynes where there is an option for a pub meal if folks wish/weather depending and a big supermarket stop to forage, We’ll take this opportunity to stock up for tomorrow as there are fewer opportunities, making sure we leave enough time to hunt for our secret camp spot.
Day 3
Monday 14th September
Komoot: https://www.komoot.com/tour/238362728
41.5 miles
Milton Keynes to Long Itchington
After a camp Breakfast we will set off. Today will be remote. There are lots of fancy dining pubs en route today but few shops and pit stops. We are aiming for an overnight in or near Long Itchington where there are plenty of pubs for an end of day hot meal and a supermarket.
Day 4
Tuesday 15th September
Komoot: https://www.komoot.com/tour/237983825
34.2 miles
Long Itchington to Birmingham
After breaking camp we will cycle 6 miles into Leamington Spa for coffee, bills Cafe looks good for breakfast, or there is a Mcdonalds, whatever you feel you need to get you home.
