This is how it started!
A whatsapp message from my good friend Sarah Bishop. Sarah had the idea after she had a convesation with another friend who had driven the North Coast 500 in a camper!
Sarah isn’t a cyclist. Neither is she the kind of person that lets details get in the way of a good adventure. Sometimes you just have to say ‘yes’ and figure the rest out as you go.
Jess said ‘yes’ immediately. She is just starting out on her cycling journey and Jess in turn got a cycling buddy, and old friend of ours – Kath – involved.
Mary & I were like excited kids. We had a gang and an Adventure to plan and work towards.
Starting and ending at Inverness Castle, the North Coast 500 (NC500) is Scotlands very own Route 66 and one of the top 5 coastal routes in the world. It was developed in 2015 by the North Highland Initiative Tourism Project Board as a driving route.
Endurance Cyclist Mark Beaumont was the first to cycle the 516 mile route in August 2015 completing it in 38 hours. The Adventure Syndicate completed it as a team time trial:
Endurance athletes like Mark Beaumont and the incredible group of women that make up the Adventure Syndicate have highlighted the NC500 as a cycling challenge.
We aren’t endurace athletes. We aren’t even athletes. We are just 5 women who love an adventure and think we can do something extraordinary.
By setting the challenge up as a Bicycle Adventure Club Project and inviting people to follow our journey we hope to inspire people, further adventures and to mark and monitor our progress.
Our start date for the ride is 9th September 2021. That gives us all plenty of time to train. We have allowed 8 days to complete the route averaging 65 miles per day. That is the biggest challenge. To ride 8 back to back 65 mile days starting from little or no experience of such a ride.

Over the coming weeks and months we will share the route details with you, introduce the team and keep you up to date with the planning and the physical & emotional journey.
The first Goal we have in the Diary is to ride 50 miles. We are doing this on the 22nd August and it will be the first time we have riden together.
